Girls and depression
A University of Alberta study suggests that 25 percent of girls aged 16 to 19 will experience an episode of major depression. That figure is nearly twice as high as that for boys of the same age, and--perhaps oddly--smoking seems to increase the risk of depression, a fact that researchers suggest might be related to attempts to self-medicate through tobacco use.
For a more thorough look at depression and females, see Christie Cozad Neuger's seminal text Counseling Women: A Narrative, Pastoral Approach.
