Mirror, mirror on the wall . . .
Four hundred years ago, Francis Bacon observed that the mind of human beings "is far from the nature of a clear and equal glass, wherein the beams of things should reflect according to their true incidence; nay, it is rather like an enchanted glass, full of superstition and imposture, if it be not delivered and reduced."Our tendency to view ourselves through a distorting lens has now been empirically documented, Scientific American reported last week.
We see ourselves in a more positive light than others see us, researchers from Princeton University report, and another study suggests that we support our own faith in God with reason and intellect while attributing the faith of others to emotionalism, comfort, and conditioning.
No wonder sermons on sin are so poorly received!
