Lessons from General Assembly
From June 14-22, I served as a commissioner to the 217th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA)--my denomination's national decision-making body. Here are some of the things I learned:
- Our church is split more radically than I realized.
- One who hesitates, loses.
- Certain elements in our denomination seek power at any cost.
- We are losing our commitment to the idea that the Spirit, at times, speaks through the minority; we are unwilling to listen to every voice because we do not trust that more listening might bring something new to the conversation.

Sad to hear my friend. Seems to be the way the world is going nowadays. It reminds me of a famous Bonhoeffer quote: "But he who can no longer listen to his brother, will soon be no longer listening to God; he will be doing nothing but prattle in the presence of God." We've turned to prattle--that's for sure.
