Pastoral Counseling

Weaving spirituality and psychology together, pastoral counseling integrates religious wisdom and the social sciences in a unique approach to psychotherapy. Pastoral counselors work with people holistically, considering the contexts of family, community, physical health, and the religious dimensions of life to provide compassionate and effective care for a variety of situations.

Certified by the American Association of Pastoral Counselors, Duane adheres to rigorous standards in his practice of pastoral counseling, including theological education, clinical training and supervision, ethical practice, and professional formation.

Theoretically, Duane works from a social constructionist perspective, utilizing postmodern psychotherapies that include narrative, solution-focused, and competency-based approaches. He holds a Ph.D. in pastoral theology and pastoral counseling, and he is noted for his ability to think theologically about the situations that lead people to seek psychotherapy.

Because of the extensive theological and psychological study required for certification, pastoral counselors are among the most educated mental health professionals in America. Standards for the discipline are established and maintained by the American Association of Pastoral Counselors, which represents more than 3,000 pastoral counselors and 100 pastoral counseling centers in North America and around the world.

Pastoral counseling represents a growing trend in the American mental-health care system. A recent study suggests that most Americans recognize the close link between spirituality, religious values, and mental health. Similarly, many Americans prefer to receive mental-health care from professionals who recognize and integrate spiritual values into the course of treatment. Pastoral counselors respect the spiritual commitments and religious traditions of those who seek assistance without imposing particular beliefs on them.
